A Week-Long Retreat with Randall M. Hasson

in beautiful Santa Fe New Mexico

After mulling over ways to create an opportunity to teach and still maintain the Gallery, we are excited to announce that we have teamed up with the Don Gaspar Inn here in Santa Fe, NM to hold a twice yearly Workshop/Retreat. These workshops will be held in the Spring and Fall of each year.

An Opportunity to Study and to Relax

This retreat will provide a balanced combination of instruction and free time to participate in some of the many activities and attractions that this part of New Mexico has to offer. Our goal is to provide participants with a relaxed atmosphere in which they can not only study, but also have an actual vacation in the destination spot of Santa Fe. People travel from all over the world to partake of the Arts and Culture in this historic small town.

Participants will be encouraged to wander through the world class art galleries of the Canyon Road area as well as the Downtown galleries, and sample some of the finest Restaurants this city has to offer, or partake of the local Museums,  Spas or Chocolate Houses. This would be a perfect opportunity to bring a non participating spouse, friend or partner.

Format

The format of this retreat will be a half day of formal study with afternoons free. In addition to half day sessions, there will be one or two evening activities as well.

After breakfast provided by the Inn, we will meet at the Gallery to begin in a group session with generalized comments and an overview of each students work and progress, Demos,  and then participants will break up to work on their respective chosen subjects.  Mr. Hasson will work with each individual in personalized sessions specific to the student's goals.

Subjects

In this format and within the same retreat, individual students will be able to choose from subjects that will be a little more personalized:

Formal Calligraphy:

For a beginning or beginning/intermediate student, the structure and mechanics of up to 2 formal western calligraphic hands can be studied. The student will be asked to submit in advance which hands they are interested in studying.. Students will have a choice of studying 2 different formal hands in 2 half week sessions, or one formal hand with the second half of the week being devoted to variations and personalization of that hand.

Italic, Textura or Blackletter, Uncial, Lively Roman caps, lower case Roman hand, Bastarda, Foundational, Versals, and drawn letters.

Calligraphic abstractions and variations on any of the above hands can also be taught.

Levels: beginning or beginning/intermediate. Familiarity with basic calligraphic tools and materials is recommended.

 Journal Techniques: Text and Texture

A fabulous journal to work on, we will use as our ground the 11” X 16”Nujabi Taj Mahal watercolor book

The goal of this class is to experiment in journal format with a variety of media (including sumi, walnut and acrylic inks, acrylic paint, acrylic mediums, and permanent markers) to achieve coloration and textural effects. Mostly abstractions, we will move from page to page to create a cohesive and progressive composition. We will discuss the reasons behind the design decisions, color choices, and textural effects and how they relate to the text(s) or subject matter.

For watercolorists, this journal has large enough pages to paint watercolor vignettes of the beautiful surrounding areas of Santa Fe to create a travel-style journal.

The goal of this class will be to begin a journal book that can be the foundation of work in the future…

Levels: Intermediate, Advanced; familiarity with at least 2 calligraphic hands is recommended.

Canvas Techniques: Text and Texture

Discover the versatility of working on primed canvas! This ground gives the artist the ability to layer lettering, achieve staining effects, experiment with color layering and texture to achieve a depth within the artwork that is difficult to achieve on paper.

This workshop will begin with preparing unprimed canvas and testing different textures from rough to smooth.

We will experiment with a variety of media (including gel mediums, acrylic paint, acrylic ink, and colored pencil) to achieve coloration and textural effects, as well as the “framework” of composition.

We will discuss the reasons behind the design decisions, color choices, and textural effects and how they relate to the text(s) or subject. We will also explore a variety of illustration techniques for those who desire to do so.

Levels: Intermediate, Advanced; familiarity with at least 2 calligraphic hands is recommended.

Working with Layers; working with the space on the page (Weekend workshop format)

Using either (or both) formal and abstract calligraphy and calligraphic marks, the usage of light and shadow, and density vs. space will be addressed. Students will begin with a blank sheet of paper and develop letters or marks, building in layers of color and texture as they go. Materials will be addressed and introduced, including acrylics, colored pencil, and other water based media.

Levels: all
